• Featured Actor of the Day: Mike Shaffrey

Today’s Jewvangelist Featured Actor is Mike Shaffrey! Read below all about the actor who brings Pastor Lovejoy to life!

    1. Tell us about yourself. Where are you from and what is your background?

I’m originally from Laurel, Maryland. I am an Irish, English, and French mutt. In college I majored in Geography, but wanted to be a doctor and took lots of math, science, and all of the prerequisites for medical school. I was a cheerleader and a cheerleading coach, and then I worked most of my life in the business world (interactive marketing) before becoming an actor here in Hollywood.

    2. Tell us about your acting career so far.

I only started acting a couple of years ago, and have enjoyed doing all sorts of fun projects, including theater, films, web series, television, and music videos. I study with Jeffrey Marcus, and have also taken a few courses with Groundlings.

    3. What is your dream job/role/project?

My dream role would be to be the lead in a feature film — preferably a comedy but definitely a story that you would remember and want to watch again and again.

    4. Who inspires you most in your field?

My inspirational actors are Russell Crowe and Kurt Russell. I love their work. I love the Russells ;)

    1. Who do you play in Jewvangelist? Tell us about him or her.

I play Pastor Lovejoy. He is described as the “most passionate pastor in the state of California.” He has a very strong faith and love for God, his family, and his fellow man. He truly wants to save people, and believes that the word of God (from the Bible) is the way to salvation.

    2. Which aspect of your character’s personality is closest to your own? Which is the furthest?

We both like to lift weights and work very hard at it, so we are very much alike that way. And we both love our families very much. We are very different in that Pastor Lovejoy believes (at least initially) in absolute terms that all the words in the Bible must be followed as written in order to achieve salvation. I believe the bible is a book written by men and interpreted many different ways, and would rather focus on the love here on Earth that’s in front of us by following the golden rule of kindess and respect for others in our day to day lives. I believe that it’s very important to always be grateful for our many gifts and opportunities, and to be open to giving and receiving love.

    3. What drew you to Jewvangelist?

I had just become an ordained minister with the Universal Life Church Monastery, so that I could perform the blessing at my friends’ wedding ceremony. It just seemed like it was meant to be when I saw the project listed on Actor’s Access.

    4. Tell us a story about something that happened on set.

I am always the hot and sweaty guy in almost all situations, and as usual I was so sweaty after the morning takes on our first day of shooting that the crew had to use a blow dryer to dry my clothes during lunch, so they wouldn’t look soaking wet while we were filming. But my excessive internal body heat helped me to become closer to the actor who plays my wife Lizzie Lovejoy (Karen Chase) because she was really cold on the first day, so I kept hugging her close to me and helping to keep her warm. I think it helped us to form a bond. She’s wonderful.

    5. What makes Jewvangelist a must-see?

I think its very original. The characters are well developed, and Rabbi Levy is an angel. She helps people in a way that will make you smile.

What do you look for in a significant other?

Kindness, a sense of humor, and someone who pitches in and helps out in good times and bad times.
